TASK 2.
Abbreviations used in the U.S Navy:

Consider the reason for the development of these acronyms - why are they used? For what purpose? (Link to theory where relevant and possible)

  • chow hall - The cafeteria. While the Army and Air Force both officially use the term DFAC, or dining facility, most soldiers and Marines refer to it as the "chow hall."
  • deck - A floor or platform extending from end to end of a ship, or horizontal planking or plating that divides a ship into layers.
  • jarhead - A nickname for members of the United States Marine Corps. 
  • banjo -  A sandwich. ‘Banjo’ is also a nickname for the F-2 Banshee fighter.
  • rollers - 
  • baboon ass - A nickname for corned beef, based on color and flavour. 
  • salty - A new and young officer who acts like an old timer.
  • maggot - One of a number of terms for Army Sleeping Bag, or a nickname for someone that could be used to degrade them.

TASK 3.
Transcript analysis

Although the subject is serious and the overall register is formal, the "patient" doesn't use embarrassing lexis as to not embarrass themselves around the "doctor". For example, phrases like: "(.)you know what I mean don’t you love..." emphasises how the patient doesn't feel comfortable enough to share really in depth, and personal information. Along side this, the doctor converges their language to help the patient understand, and so the patient feels that they can talk freely and not be overwhelmed by complicated terminology. Alternatively, the doctor could be converging their language to sound more reliable.
